The resources below were used in a course aiming to expand social justice and social work, beyond anthropocentricism. Social work educators may consider using these tools to build awareness around key issues of social justice that have not been addressed by social work, namely the extension of ethical concern to nonhuman animals and the various roles they play in human society.
While not all materials centre a Critical Animal Studies perspective, each provides relevant opportunities for discussion or to apply theories to practice contexts that expand the social work focus beyond human animals. In doing so we can ensure that policy and social work practice are responsive to today’s social constructions of animals and to social justice issues and to foster contributions to the field of Critical Animal Studies and Human Animal Studies by social workers.
